Living Here

A few of us have settled in Yangshuo. The expat community is a small but vibrant one. The vast majority of foreigners living here are involved in English schools, a small number of us run businesses in the tourism sector.

For most of us, living here is very special because Yangshuo is a small paradise

Firstly, Yangshuo is very safe with very little crime and almost none targeted at visitors. You can walk around at night time and be very safe.

Secondly, it is a very relaxed town. Apart from West Street during the weekends, the whole area is much more relaxed than any of the big cities in China. Most of us have a bicycle or a motorbike which we get around on. In no time, we can be down by the river having a swim or just explore another part of this beautiful area. Hiking, camping, bike riding, swimming, watching DVDs and reading books are things that we can easily do here. Also the food is very good here. We get a great range of dishes from all over the world and we know where to experience the best of each

Thirdly, there is no pollution in the air. It is hard to descried some of the heavy pollution in the major cities in China, but in Yangshuo we have none of that as there is a local law forbidding any factories opening up that may cause pollution

Also, the locals are really friendly and welcoming. Once you are here for a while, you will make several friends and then you can really discover all the small things that make the Chinese people click. Things like what happens on their festivals, the importance of their children and so on

Life is good

If you are planning to come to Yangshuo and live, then you should consider learning some Chinese if you are not fluent. Even though most locals speak good English, you will find that speaking the local language will enhance your experiences here.
